The Magic "Q-Ball"

Notes and References from Sunday Jan. 9, 2000 The Biblical "Magic Q-Ball" Ask it any question.

Remember those 8-balls or Q-Balls that you ask a "yes" or "no" question, shake it and turn it over? The answer appears—great fun! We’ll that is what the Urim and Thummim were. They were small objects, probably stones (could have been metal) and they had a yes and a no inscribed on them. The Rabbi’s believed they possessed divine powers. They would carry them in their breast pocket of their coats and when asked a yes or no question would look to the stones for the answer.

The Bible prophets eventually replaced such superstitious rituals that had their origins in oracles. Most religions have help on to a number of rituals and rites that offer little more then the Rabbi’s stones or, for that matter, your Q-ball. From statues to water symbols must never be taken literally. Mrs. Eddy gave us a practical, provable, scientific approach to receiving divine power and her definitions of words such as Urim and Thummim and Oil so reflect qualities of thoughts not rituals of matter.

Ex 28:30 And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the Lord: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.

595:11-16 THUMMIM. Perfection; the eternal demand of divine Science. The Urim and Thummim, which were to be on Aaron's breast when he went before Jehovah, were holiness and purification of thought and deed, which alone can fit us for the office of spiritual teaching.

596:11-19 URIM. Light. The rabbins believed that the stones in the breast-plate of the high-priest had supernatural illumination, but Christian Science reveals Spirit, not matter, as the illuminator of all. The illuminations of Science give us a sense of the nothingness of error, and they show the spiritual inspiration of Love and Truth to be the only fit preparation for admission to the presence and power of the Most High.

Have you ever had someone ask to see your homework in school so they could copy it? There is a Bible story that is similar: Matt 25: 1-13 Another example of people looking for easy answers or miraculous help in need.

1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. 9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. 11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. 13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

592:25 OIL. Consecration; charity; gentleness; prayer; heavenly inspiration.

Look at the qualities required for healing:

Consecration (dedication) to a higher standard---to the Christ ideal.
Charity (unselfishness) that seeks to do unto others rather than putting your own desires first. Gentleness. Ever been cut off on the freeway and wanted to get even? Look at the following hymn:
Hymn 315:1-3

Speak gently, it is better far To rule by love than fear; Speak gently, let no harsh word mar The good we may do here.

Speak gently to the erring ones, They must have toiled in vain; Perchance unkindness made them so; O win them back again.

Speak gently, 'tis a little thing, Dropped in the heart's deep well; The good, the joy that it may bring, Eternity shall tell.

Right there on the freeway is your opportunity to speak gently (mentally) and express your "better self"-the Christ ideal.

Prayer: Turning to God with a receptivity to listen not speak. That is what prayer is. The Bible does not start with the words, "In the beginning, O wretched problem of mine…", and the Lord’s Prayer doesn’t start with Our Problem which art on earth…" Prayer is tuning to God to seek His glory and serve Him better.

Finally, we have Heavenly Inspiration. That is what guides us to make the right decisions. When we reach that level we attract to us the right class, the right partner, job, etc. Our health is assured, as is our happiness, but more important, the world receives the best we have to give.
